Labor love
Dear Guild siblings:
As we head into a long (for some) weekend that gets a lot of attention for beach time, baseball and the start of the college football season, I wanted to acknowledge the true focus of this holiday: you.
Every day you show up at jobs that expect a lot of you and you deliver, whether it’s in a newsroom, on a college campus, in a nonprofit advocacy group or a mobilizing organization for Starbucks baristas and others who want the protection and power of being part of a union.
The NewsGuild of Greater Philadelphia is, indeed, a diverse and expanding force.
That is because of all of you.
So on this holiday that honors labor, take a breather and a bow.
For our members at The Inquirer, rejoice that with September comes the start of the third year of a three-year contract and with that, a raise.
I do have one request: Please take a moment on Monday to honor in whatever way you choose our brave and unrelenting Guild colleagues on the other end of Pennsylvania, where the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette strike that began in October 2022 continues. Yes, 2022.
Those enduring strikers are an awe-inspiring example of commitment to our cause, defying a despicable employer who refuses to value its employees.
Diane
Happy Labor Day.
In solidarity and pride in the union movement,
