The NewsGuild of Greater Philadelphia

2021 Guild Local Officer Nominations.

October 26, 2020billrossInquirer

President Mastrull opened the meeting with the following statement:

The tension and hurt feelings that have challenged The Inquirer/Daily News family these past several fraught months have not skipped the Guild’s Executive Board.

I read a quote yesterday about needing to see each other to heal in these times of isolation and despair.

Until we can do that — be in the same space, share a hug or an in-person smile — I want to underscore that our strength as a union is in our unity. The unity that drove management bonkers with tote boards and posters, sidewalk demonstrations and marches through the hallways and cubicles at 801 chanting as we went.

The unity that got us raises in this current contract.

We have shown that when we work together we accomplish important things.

We obviously still have much to do, which leads me to my other point: This union isn’t eight board members. It’s the nearly 300 of you.

That means that the work ahead must involve all of us.

So whether you are nominated for the board or are about to leave it, a longtime Guild member or a recent hire, you’re all needed.

I know you’re tired. But we’re facing possible layoffs of colleagues next month. We can’t afford to be tired or quiet.

I want to take this moment to acknowledge someone who hasn’t been tired or quiet and, as a result, has made meaningful — I would argue life-saving — contributions to this union over the last year: Anna Orso. She has decided against running for reelection as unit chair. But her impact — including ensuring we all have access to N95 masks during these terrifying times — deserves our deepest gratitude.

And, yes, I assured Anna last night when she informed me of her decision to sit out this election that her work isn’t done because, as I said, this is a union of all of us.

Thank you, Anna, and thank you all for staying devoted to an industry and a company that hasn’t always loved you back.

In solidarity,

Diane
