Guild certified as the exclusive bargaining agent for Restaurant Opportunities Centers

Dear Guild member,

I am very pleased to announce that yesterday the Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia/Communications Workers of America Local 38010 won a historic election at the Philadelphia office of the National Labor Relations Board.

By unanimous vote the Guild was certified as the exclusive bargaining agent for all Restaurant Opportunities Centers coordinators in Philadelphia, New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Miami.

The Restaurant Opportunities Centers coordinators train back of the house restaurant staff such as cooks and dishwashers to become front of the house employees such as servers, bartenders or hosts, and also fight for better working conditions for the restaurant employees whom they train. For more info on ROC, please visit RocUnited.org.

The new group consists of 22 Guild members, at the different locations identified above, with the goal of bargaining a master agreement to cover those offices and future offices that open in more major US cities.

Organizing a new unit isn’t easy, but through the hard work of Guild Executive Director Bill Ross, Office Administrator Rita Dooling and Guild counsel Neal Goldstein, the effort was a success.

Huge thanks are due for Bill, Rita and Neal, for bringing in a group such as ROC which will only grow more Guild members.

In solidarity,
Dan Gross, President
Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia/Communications Workers of America Local 38010
